In a consultative meeting held today at the Bunge Tower, the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, chaired by Senator James Murango of Kirinyaga County, engaged with the Embassy of Japan to discuss Japanese government initiatives in Kenya's agriculture, livestock, and blue economy sectors.

Β

Representing the Japanese Ambassador to Kenya, Mr. Ogihara Hiroshi, Deputy Chief of Mission, highlighted Japan's long-standing support for Kenya's agricultural sector, since the 1980s. He emphasized two key pillars: food and nutrition security, and the promotion of commercial, market-oriented agriculture.

Β

"The promotion of the fisheries industry and the realization of maritime security are important issues that form part of the Blue Economy," Mr. Ogihara stated. "To date, Japan has co-hosted the International Conference on Blue Economy with a contribution of US$3 million and has provided 17 vessels and equipment to the Maritime Police, now Coast Guard."

Β

The discussions centred around strengthening cooperation between Kenya and Japan in the agricultural sector, with a focus on enhancing food security, promoting commercial agriculture, and supporting the blue economy initiatives.

Β

Both parties expressed their commitment to fostering stronger ties and exploring opportunities for mutually beneficial partnerships that can drive sustainable development and economic growth in Kenya's vital agricultural and maritime sectors.

Β

The meeting was attended by several committee members, including Vice Chairperson Senator Alexander Munyi, Senator Daniel Maanzo, Senator Wahome Wamatinga, Senator Enoch Wambua, Senator David Wakoli, and Senator Allan Chesang.
