The Departmental Committee on Lands interrogated the allocations to the Ministry of Lands and the National Land Commission in the 2024 Budget Policy Statement (BPS).

Under the leadership of Chairperson Hon. Joash Nyamoko (North Mugirango), Members engaged the Cabinet Secretary for Lands, Hon. Alice Wahome and Principal Secretary for Lands & Public Works, Hon. Nixon Korir, as well as National Land Commission, Chief Executive Officer (CE)), Ms. Kabale Tache on the respective allocations in the BPS.

During the meeting, MPs sought clarity on pending bills, as well as revenues by the respective departments in the past financial year, which the legislators noted would bring about issues of key concern when writing its Report.

BPS is a critical fiscal tool that sets out the broad strategic priorities and policy goals to guide the National Government and County Governments in preparing their budgets for the subsequent financial year and over the medium term. The 2024 BPS is anchored on sustaining development through the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.

Hon. Nyamoko, challenged the respective accounting officers to furnish the Committee with itemized details of key strategic projects that they planned to undertake for better clarity, and which will be used in the final Report that is to be presented before the Budget and Appropriations Committee.

"It is very disappointing when we see State Departments under our oversight lose revenue. That is why clarity especially on projects you are undertaking is important when we proceed to defend your Budget," said Hon. Nyamoko.

The Committee stressed the need for better financial prudence from the respective State Departments for better utilization of resources allocated.
