The Senate Board of Management, led by The Clerk of the Senate, Mr. Jeremiah Nyegenye, visited the Turkana County Assembly in a bid to inspect the level of preparedness and plans on the ground in readiness to hold the Senate Plenary and Committee sittings dubbed Senate Mashinani, scheduled from the 25th to 29th September, 2023. The Senate Mashinani initiative, which is held annually, is part of the Senate's continuous effort of enhancing its working relationship with the counties and interaction with the public at a grassroots level whilst also giving the legislators an opportunity to assess the state of devolution in the county.Β Β
Upon arriving at the County Assembly of Turkana, The Senate Board of Management was well received by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Christopher Nakuleu Doye and his able Clerk Mr. Linus Lokawa. "We are glad to receive you and eventually host you for Senate Mashinani in September and in honour of this auspicious event we have also aligned the Turkana festival to take place during that period as it is usually scheduled in August" stated the Speaker of the County Assembly. On behalf of the Board of Management, the Clerk of the Senate thanked the Speaker and his office for their hospitality and great reception. "There is a lot of excitement and enthusiasm coming to Turkana and we appreciate the office of the Speaker taking the time to meet us. As you can see we have brought a big team today which is testament of how serious and important the Senate Mashinani is to us at the Senate. We are ready to roll up our sleeves and get straight to work in making the plans on the ground a success" reiterated Mr. Nyegenye.
Through the Clerk of the County Assembly, the Senate Board was apprised of all identified areas of interest that were initially agreed upon by the technical teams from both the County and the Senate, including key areas that require improvement and or alterations and recommendations given. The Board then concluded their visit by proceeding on a tour of the Assembly and all its facilities. "We are excited and satisfied with the progress so far and the level of preparedness ahead of the Senate sittings" expressed the Clerk of the Senate.
The last Mashinani sittings were previously held in Uasin Gishu County and Kitui County in September 2018 and September 2019 respectively.
