The National Assembly Committee on Defence, Intelligence and Foreign Relations is currently on a four-day inspection visit of Nakuru County to assess projects undertaken by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).
Led by Hon. (Dr.) Fred Ikana (Shinyalu), Members met with General Officer Commanding, Western Command, Major Gen. Jeff Nyagah, Defence Food Production and ProcessingΒ Factory, Lt. Col. R. K. Muthoka, and DHQ Infrastructure, Lt Col. W. K. Karanja. They visited the KDF Food Production and Processing Factory located at Gilgil Barracks.Β
Β The factory produces dehydrated vegetables including spinach, potatoes, carrots, cabbages, and mixed vegetables, supplying the KDF, other security agencies, Delamare, and private individuals. The factory also supplies countries including Somalia, South Sudan andΒ Burundi.
Β During the visit, lawmakers highlighted the high cost of conventional fuel used by the factory and recommended exploring more affordable and sustainable options like hydropower and solar energy.
The Committee noted the factory's role in providing a guaranteed market for farmers, particularly in Nakuru and neighbouring counties, thereby boosting their economic well-being.Β
Members, however, raised concernΒ regarding Government procurement regulations that limit farmer participation due to lengthy processes and delayed payments.
The factory's commitment to environmental sustainability was commended, with Lt. Col. Muthoka, the Factory Manager, revealing that they have surpassed their target by planting over 40,000 trees in the last financial year.
Members acknowledged the challenges faced by the factory, including unpredictable weather patterns and limitations imposed by Government procurement regulations.Β
They proposed exploring alternative solutions such as direct procurement from farmers to streamline the process and ensure prompt payment. Additionally, the Committee acknowledged the need for increased funding to enable upfront payments to farmers.
The factory's future plans include diversifying into animal production, canning fruits, and expanding its nucleus farm.
The Committee also inspected the Gilgil garrison, newly constructed officers' mess and accommodation.
