The Budget & Appropriations Committee (BAC) chaired by Hon. Ndindi Nyoro (Kiharu), continued engagements with Departmental Committee Chairpersons regarding the 2024 Budget Policy Statements.

Among the Departmental Committee chairpersons who appeared on the Third day was the Chairperson, Departmental Committee on Education, Hon. Julius Melly (Tinderet) who emphasized the need for adequate funding to address critical services and programs within the education sector.

Hon. Melly's appeal comes in the wake of the proposed reduction in budget ceilings allocated to the Ministry of Education and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). He urged the Budget and Appropriations Committee to reconsider these allocations, stating that reduced ceilings would hurt educational initiatives and services.

ย Hon. Melly emphasized the need for the Government to continue sponsoring students in private universities, warning that unresolved pending bills could jeopardize the student's quest to receive certificates.

A number of Departmental Committee chairpersons recommended that all development project funding should not lapse at the end of the financial year but adopt an accrual accounting format where funding is renewed until the completion of a project.

In light of the priority areas identified in the 2024 BPS, they recommended that the BAC should consider additional funding for these areas.

In response, Hon. Nyoro assured the Departmental Committee chairpersons of the BAC's commitment to optimizing resource allocation within the constraints of the national budget. Despite acknowledging the scarcity of resources, he pledged to prioritize initiatives that would best serve the country's urgent needs.

Other chairpersons who appeared on Wednesday 28th February 2024 include; Hon. Eric Karemba Muchangi (Labour), Hon. Dan Wanyama (Sports & Culture), Hon. Vincent Musyoka (Energy), Hon. Gabriel Tongoyo (Administration & Internal Security), Hon. George Gitonga Murugara (Justice & Legal Affairs), Hon. Japhet Kareke Mbiuki (Tourism & Wildlife) and vice chairperson for Health Committee, Hon. Ntwiga Patrick Munene.
