The National Assembly Education Committee, chaired by Hon. Julius Melly (Tinderet) conducted a familiarization and inspection visit of the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) headquarter in Kasarani, Nairobi County.
Making remarks, Hon. Melly underscored the importance of KISE in ensuring all children with special needs access an education, noting that it needs to be strengthened and undertook to work closely with the Institute to ensure it achieves its mandate.
β KISE has done a good job, despite the challenges it faces in financing. As a Committee, we pledge our full support to the institute as it undertakes its important roles,β said Hon. Melly .
During an earlier session with the management, KISE Director Dr. Norman Kiogora and Council chairperson Habat Sheikh Abdi (OGW) told Members that the agency was established in 1986 through a legal notice. However, Dr. Kiogora said this fact has hampered their operations and plans to devolve their services.
Hon. Melly in response to the concerns raised said they will collaborate with the institution to develop an Act of Parliament that will fully anchor the Institution in the law, and by extension strengthen the special needs education sector.
KISE is a Semi-Autonomous Government Agency of the Ministry of Education (SAGA).
