LABOUR COMMITTEE VISIT NATIONAL INDUSTRIAL TRAINING AUTHORITY (NITA).
The National Assembly Committee on Labour conducted a site visit of the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) to ascertain its preparedness and that of other Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Institutions in training individuals for the job market. This follows the proposal by the Government for Kenyans to seek jobs abroad.
It is against this backdrop that the Committee led by chair Hon. Eric Muchangi went for a site visit to NITA. Members noted that going forward Kenyans seeking greener pastures abroad must be equipped with the requisite skills to ensure that they remain competitive.
Hon. Muchangi said that NITA and other TVET institutions are tasked with forging pathways for Kenyans to deepen their competitive technical capacity and boost the number of competent human resources to build an engine to power the country’s economic growth.
NITA's Director General Mr. Stephen Ogenga assured the Committee that the institutions are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment to complement the new Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) curriculum.
He added that the curriculum is envisaged to benefit among others the out-of-school youth, the unemployed population, those currently educated and trained who need to update their competencies, individuals from the formal and informal sector, those with little or no education, individuals who are made redundant so that they can learn new competencies and those who have retired but who would like to develop new skills and competences.
"The skilling and reskilling exercise being conducted by NITA will ensure that we have the right people with the right skills for the job market", said Mr. Ogenga.
