The Senate has wrapped up its historic five-day sitting in Kilifi County, bringing to a close a week in which parliamentary debate moved beyond Nairobi and into the heart of the Coast.

Held at the Kilifi County Assembly under the Senate Mashinani programme, the sitting combined plenary proceedings with committee hearings, public engagements and visits to projects and institutions across the county.

Kilifi became the fifth county to host Senate sittings outside Nairobi, following Uasin Gishu in 2018, Kitui in 2019, Turkana in 2023 and Busia in 2025.

​The Senate Standing Committee on Devolution and Intergovernmental Relations has directed the County Executive of Kilifi to urgently establish functional sewerage infrastructure in Malindi before the onset of anticipated El Nino rains. 

The directive, aimed at mitigating a catastrophic cholera outbreak and public health crisis, was issued during the committee's oversight visit yo Malindi Municipality Board Offices as part of the ongoing Senate Mashinani initiative.

Members of the National Assembly have reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring that legislation, public spending, oversight and citizen participation reflect the different realities of the people they are intended to serve.

Officially opening the Regional Forum on Inclusive Legislatures for Gender-Responsive Policies (ILGRP) in Nairobi, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Hon. Gladys Boss said inclusive governance must move beyond representation to influence how Parliament makes decisions and responds to the needs of society.

Members of Parliament have called for adequate financing, stronger coordination and effective oversight to ensure the National Policy on Women’s Economic Empowerment (NPWEE) translates into tangible improvements in the lives of Kenyan women.

The legislators raised the concerns during a sensitization workshop convened by the Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) and the Institute for Public Finance (IPF) on the NPWEE and Sessional Paper No. 6 of 2026.

They underscored the need to move beyond policy formulation and focus on practical implementation.
