The Senate Standing Committee on Justice, Legal Affairs and Human Rights (JLAHR) has pushed for an urgent policy shift to stop the prosecution and re-victimization of Female Genital Mutilation survivors. Meeting with the Anti-FGM Board leadership, the lawmakers agreed that the Prohibition of Female Genital Mutilation Act of 2011 has inadvertently led to victims being treated as criminals.

The Cabinet Secretary for National Treasury Hon. John Mbadi has assured the Committee on Finance and National Planning that there is no cause for alarm on the Kenyan economy even as the ongoing war in the Middle East threatens to dampen global growth prospects.

He was speaking when he appeared before the Committee to apprise the lawmakers on the policy responses the government was undertaking to cushion Kenyans from economic shocks as a result of the war.

Members of the National Assembly have this afternoon paid glowing tribute to the late Ol Kalou Member of Parliament, Hon. David Njuguna Kiaraho, following his untimely demise, with Members honouring his legacy of service, professionalism, and dedication to the people.

The House commenced tributes with a moment of silence in honour of the departed legislator.

The Senate Standing Committee on National Security, Defence and Foreign Relations has directed security and environmental agencies to urgently investigate the alleged forced disappearance of fishermen at Lake Nakuru National Park and address growing concerns over public safety and environmental compliance.

The Senate Education Committee, Chaired by Sen. Betty Montet, today held a high-level consultative meeting at Parliament Buildings, Nairobi, with the Governor of Vihiga County, H.E. Wilber Khasilwa Ottichilo, to deliberate on the status of implementation of Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) and Vocational Training Centres (VTCs) in the County.

 

The Governor was accompanied by the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Education, Anne Desma, alongside technical officers including the Director ECDE and Director VTC.

Senators have today voiced strong reservations over the Kshs80 billion cooperation agreement between the National Government and Nairobi City County, questioning if the move marks a return to the controversial Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) era. 

 

During the session with the Prime Cabinet Secretary Hon. Musalia Mudavadi, the Members of the Devolution Committee raised concerns about the potential erosion of county autonomy.
