The Senate Committee on Labour and Social Welfare, Thursday put the management of the Technical University of Kenya (TUK) on the spot over the collapse of its staff retirement benefits scheme, which has left retirees and soon-to-retire employees in financial distress.

 

Appearing before the committee chaired by Ag. Chair Sen. (Rtd) Justice Stewart Madzayo (Kilifi), Vice-Chancellor Prof. Benedict Mutua was pressed to explain how deductions were made for years without being remitted to the pension scheme.

The National Assembly has called for the expedited extension of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), citing its immense contribution to Kenya’s economy and livelihoods.

In a Motion sponsored by Hon. Jane Kagiri (Laikipia) and supported across the political divide, Members underscored the importance of AGOA in boosting exports, creating employment, and sustaining social development.

The National Assembly has been petitioned to amend the Consumer Protection Act, Cap 501, to formally codify the 𝘪𝘯 𝘥𝘶𝘱𝘭𝘶𝘮 𝘳𝘶𝘭𝘦, a safeguard intended to protect borrowers from paying interest that exceeds the original loan principal.

Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Moses Wetang’ula informed the House of a petition from Mr. Allen Waiaki Kishore, a Senior Counsel with Mwai & Allen Advocates.
