The National Assembly Departmental Committee on Education has stepped in to assist final-year Bachelor of Pharmacy students from the University of Nairobi to secure internship placements who missed the 2025/2026 internship cohort due to delayed release of their final examination results.

The Committee, led by Hon. Eve Obara , met with affected students in Parliament following a formal petition presented to the House, in which the students decried the delayed release of their final-year results, terming it a violation of their fundamental rights.

In the petition, the studentsβ€”who completed their final examinations on March 7, 2025β€”accused the University of administrative negligence, poor communication, and discrimination. They claimed that their counterparts in the Dental Surgery programme, who completed their exams within the same academic calendar, received their results within two weeks and have since proceeded for internship.

"I can confirm to this Committee that through your intervention as Members we received our results last week. However we have missed the window for placement in the internship", said a student.

Committee Members supported the students with Hon. Clive Gisairo said, β€œWe are gravely concerned that the University has failed to communicate transparently or take responsibility for this prolonged delay."

Hon. Rebecca Tonkei added that, β€œWe will expedite engagement with the institution’s management and ensure that justice is served in instances where students results are delayed."

The students have appealed to the Education Committee to facilitate submission of their names to the Ministry of Health for inclusion in the current internship cohort.

The Education Committee resolved to engage the Departmental Committee on Health to facilitate the posting of the affected students to pharmacy internship placements under the 2025/2026 cohort, which is already underway.

β€œWe will work with the Ministry of Health to ensure that no student is left behind simply because of a university’s internal administrative failures,” said Hon. Eve Obara Committee Vice Chair.
