The National Assembly Departmental Committee on Education chaired by Hon. Julius Melly (Tinderet) is advocating for a comprehensive and collaborative approach to address exam cheating. The Committee chairperson who spoke today after meeting officials from the Communication Authority of Kenya (CAK) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) emphasized the need to exert every possible effort in combating this detrimental practice.

The National Assembly’s Departmental Committee on Sports and Culture inspected the Bomas of Kenya Cultural Centre in Karen Nairobi as part of its oversight mandate.

The Committee, led by the Vice Chair Hon. James Wamacukuru (Kabete), conducted the inspection visit to evaluate the progress made in its rehabilitation. The State Department of Culture was allocated additional funds during last year's Supplementary Budget, and the Committee is keen to assess how these funds were utilized.

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi attended a roundtable meeting and other engagements at the Inter parliamentary Union (IPU) headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. 

During the series of meetings, the Speaker held discussions with the Union’s Secretary General Martin Chungong and later paid a courtesy call on Dr Cleopa Kilonzo Mailu, Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the United Nation (UN) Office in Geneva.

Senate Committee on Roads, Housing and Transportation held a meeting with Governor of Kajiado County, Hon. Joseph Ole Lenku in respect of the Petition concerning access to title deeds for properties bought at Jamii Bora estate, Kisaju, Kajiado County.

The Governor said that Kisaju Estate developed by Ms. Sofia Ingrid Munro was initially meant to be housing units for the poor from slums of Nairob; Korogocho, Kibera and Mathare.

The Senate Standing Committee on Finance and Budget chaired by Mandera Senator Ali Roba, earlier today held a meeting with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Commissioner General Rispah Simiyu to look into various queries that had been raised by senators.

Issues raised include suspension of tax relief by Senator Crystal Asige as well as allegations of unsettled and unremitted statutory PAYE deductions for staff in county assemblies.

The Senate Standing Committee on Trade, Industrialization and Tourism today held a meeting with Kenya Airlines Pilots Association following a resolution of the Committee's meeting held on 13th June 2023 to engage various relevant stakeholders regarding a Statement sought by Sen. Samson Cherarkey on Operations and Financial Status of Kenya Airways.

The Senate Committee on Devolution and Intergovernmental Relations, chaired by Wajir Senator Mohamed Abbas, has today put Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku to task over the alleged misuse of a Kshs63 million World Bank grant to expand the Kajiado Municipality Market. 

This comes after Kajiado Municipality Clothes Market Traders drew the attention of the Senate, through a petition to the August House, that the County Government of Kajiado had misappropriated funds meant to refurbish and expand the market by scaling down the amenities that were intended and budgeted for.

A Parliamentary Committee has recommended the introduction of a 4% Sugar Development Levy to bolster cane development and revitalize Kenya's ailing sugar industry.

In a recent session led by Hon. Dr. John Mutunga, Chairperson of the Agriculture and Livestock Committee, Members of Parliament (MPs) engaged with representatives from the Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) and the Sugar Directorate to discuss the Sugar Bill 2023.

The National Assembly Public Investment Committee on Social Services Administration and Agriculture met the management of the Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) , an agency mandated with the regulation, development and promotion of crops.

Officials of AFA appeared before the Committee chaired by Hon. Emannuel Wangwe (Navakholo) to respond to audit queries for the Financial Year 2018/2019.

Hon. Mwengi Mutuse (Kibwezi West)  has given Notice of a Motion calling on the Government to institutionalize rainwater harvesting and develop an affirmative action plan for investment in rainwater harvesting purification, storage, and distribution. Specifically, Hon. Mutuse wants the Government to address the lack of water in the Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL).

"Over the last two months, the Senate Standing Committee on Energy has been looking into why the cost of electricity continues to be high in this country." Said the Chairperson of Energy Committee, Sen. Wahome Wamatinga.

The Chairperson stated that the inquiry has not only opened the committee's eyes to many things, it has also demystified a lot of myths that were held before.

The National Assembly has passed the reports of the Departmental Committee on Environment, Forestry and Mining Committee on two Conventions championing for climate change and environment conservation. 

The Motions to adopt the Committee’s Reports on the conventions were moved by the Committee Vice chairperson, Hon. Charles Kamuren (Baringo South).

The National Assembly's Departmental Committee on Sports and Culture  conducted an inspection visit of the Jamhuri Sports Complex along Ngong road In Nairobi.

The team led by  Hon. Mary Emaase (Teso South) inspected the facility as part of the  Committee's mandate which includes inspecting and reporting on expenditures and implementation of sport's  projects funded by the Government. The facility is ready for use, however, the contractor has not handed it over as a result of pending bills.

Kathuri Murungi, the Deputy Speaker of the Senate participated in the just concluded 63rd Organization of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) Parliamentary Assembly and 43rd Organization of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) - European Union (OACPS-EU) JointParliamentary Assembly (JPA), in Brussels, Belgium.
