Senate Committee Land, Environment and Natural Resources Chaired by Nyandarua Senator John Methu today met with International Development Law Organization (IDLO) to deliberate on best practices relating to public policy and Legislation on resources and the application of the same in mitigation measures including climate Change.

The meeting was opened by Senate Majority Leader, Senator Aaron Cheruiyot who assured the participants that Senate is ready to collaborate with all Non-Profit Organizations that are involved in financing locally- led Climate Action. 

Senator Methu in his opening remarks said that It will be interesting to listen to discussions on climate justice and get a perspective of the rule of law approach for achieving transformative climate action. The urgency of this matter cannot be overstated, given the myriad of challenges that we face in safeguarding our environment and combating climate change. We continue to witness adverse and far-reaching implications on the well-being and welfare of our constituents, our counties, nation, continent, and the entire planet.

‘’As representatives of the people entrusted with the noble duty and responsibility to govern and make decisions that shape their future, it is incumbent upon us to recognize the gravity of the environmental crises we face. Our counties are currently significantly ravaged and are suffering from the devastating consequences including deforestation, pollution, and global warming. The very fabric of our ecosystems, natural resources, and the delicate balance of life are at stake.’’ Lands Committee Chair added.

International Development Law Organization (IDLO), has a significant experience on empowering legal service providers and civil society organizations and building their capacity to spread rights awareness, improve legal literacy and provide legal services. The Organization also facilitate networks to promote collaboration among groups representing justice seekers.

Whether in fragile contexts, emerging democracies or middle-income Countries, IDLO supports the 2030 Agenda through its programmes, research and policy advocacy. Building institutions for peace and justice, strengthening accountability, empowering women and girls, fighting corruption, advancing climate justice and promoting inclusive economic growth are some of the ways in which IDLO’s programmes and other activities further the implementation of the sustainable Development Goals.

The Committee Members were also taken trough Financing Locally-Led climate Action (FLLoCA) program. The Program is financed by World Bank (International Development Association), Government of Denmark (DANIDA), Government of Sweden (SIDA), Government of Germany (KfW) and Government of Kenya at an overall level of USD. 301.4M

The Program became effective on 1st February, 2022 and is expected to run until 30th June, 2027.

The FLLoCA Program Development Objective (PDO) is to deliver locally-led climate resilience actions and strengthen county and national governments' capacity to manage climate risks, Support the development and strengthen policy, legal and regulatory frameworks at national and county levels for accelerated access to climate financing for building resilience at local levels.
