BUDGET COMMITTEE MEETS DEPARTMENTAL COMMITTEE CHAIRPERSONS TO DISCUSS 2023/24 BUDGET ESTIMATES

The National Assembly's Budget and Appropriations Committee chaired by Hon. Ndindi Nyoro (Kiharu)  entered day three of meetings with the Departmental Committee Chairpersons on the 2023/24 Budget Estimates.

On the third day of the Committee's engagement, a number of Departmental Committee Chairpersons presented and argued for their Committee Reports on Budget Estimates for 2023/2024.

Members of the Budget and Appropriations Committee raised concerns about the reallocation of funds. They noted that the reallocation of funds meant for projects in some departments will affect ongoing projects.

In response, a number of the Chairpersons said the proposed reductions and reallocation of funds were justifiable and due diligence was done in order to accommodate other sectors of priority.

Hon. Joash Nyamoko (Lands) told the Committee that the Departments in the Ministry of Lands are sufficiently funded and intend to utilize the funds promptly without asking for any additional funds.

The Budget and Appropriations Committee assured the chairpersons that the 2023/2024 Budget will prioritize funding the stalled and ongoing projects before embarking on the new ones.

The Chairpersons who appeared before BAC were Hon. Joash Nyamoko (Lands), Hon. George Murugara (Justice and Legal Affairs), Hon. James Gakuya (Trade, Industry, and Cooperatives), Hon. (Dr.) Robert Pukose (Health), Hon. Alice Wambui Ng’ang’a (Social Protection), Hon. Eric Muchangi (Labour), and Hon. Gabriel Tongoyo (Administration and Internal Affairs).
