DEFENCE COMMITTEE MEETS KEY STATE DEPARTMENTS TO CONSIDER BUDGET ESTIMATES

The National Assembly Defence, Intelligence and Foreign Relations Committee has retreated to consider submissions on Revenue and Expenditure Estimates from Ministries, Departments and Agency's under its oversight purview.

The Committee Chaired by Hon. Nelson Koech oversees the Ministry of Defence, that of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs and the National Intelligence Service (NIS).

Defence Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale, who appeared before the Committee accompanied by Principal Secretary (PS) Hon. Patrick Mariru and other Ministry officials persuaded Members to consider giving an additional allocation to the Ministry to fulfil its obligations.

Hon. Koech pledged to put up a case for more budgetary allocation to the Ministry to upscale pending military recruitments and other critical defence related projects.

"We have heard you and I will implore on this Committee to take a keen focus on the Budget issue, especially on the need for recruitment," said Hon. Koech.

The Committee also met the Ministry of East African Community, Arid and Semi-Arid Lands and Regional Development team led by Cabinet Secretary Ms. Rebecca Miano accompanied by Principal Secretary in the State Department of East African Community Affairs Mr. Abdi Dubat.

In addition, the outgoing NIS Director General-Major General Phillip Kameru, presented the Agency's Budget estimates.

Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Dr. Alfred Mutua, accompanied by PSs Dr. Korir Sing'oei (Foreign Affairs) and Ms. Roselyn Njogu (Diaspora Affairs) also appeared before the Committee to defend his Ministry's Revenue and Budget Statement.
