SENATE COMMITTEE ON LABOUR AND SOCIAL WELFARE MEETS CS ABABU NAMWAMBA REGARDING LINDA SOKA PETITION ON TAPPING INTO THE KSHS. 302 BILLION FOOTBALL ECONOMY.

The Senate Standing Committee on Labour and Social Welfare Chaired by West Pokot Senator, Julius Murgor held a meeting with the CS Ministry of Youth Affairs, the Arts and Sports, Hon. Ababu Namwamba; and a delegation of Petitioners led by Mr. James Gakonga to deliberate on the Ministry's response concerning Linda Soka tapping into Kshs. 302 billion football fund.

The issues raised in the petition are that: The football administration in Kenya has been marred by corruption, maladministration and lack of accountability which has negatively impacted on the industry, leaving the football players without hope in the sector; Many youth talented as football players have opted to move to other countries in search of opportunities to play professional football; The adoption of Linda Soka tapping into Ksh. 302 billion football economy presents a good opportunity to restore the sector and transform Kenya and the football economy as a whole.

Hon. Namwamba agreed with the sentiments of the Petitioners that the poor governance and management of football in the Country has worsened the standards of the sport. The CS however informed the Committee that he has held several consultative meetings with FIFA not only to lift the ban on Kenya's Football, but also to enlist their support to restore integrity and right governance in the management of football in the Country.

The CS further informed the Committee and Petitioners that his Ministry is in the process of reviewing the Sports Policy of 2005 and Sports Act 2013 to provide an enabling environment for sports development; and that the Ministry is committed to ensure that all sports federations in the country comply with laid down regulations and rules to maintain accountability and transparency in management of Sports.

In conclusion, the CS stated that through his Ministry 'Talanta Hela' has allocated some resources to identify, recruit, nurture, market and monetize talent from the grassroots level, across the sports and creative industries.
