The National Assembly's Departmental Committee on Sports and Culture toured the Kenya National Library Services (KNLS) Maktaba Kuu Building. The delegation led by Hon. Mary Emaase (Teso South) went to assess the library's facilities and discuss the KNLS's request for additional funding for renovation.
TheΒ library comprises various sections and facilities designed to cater to different needs and interests. It features a children's theatre with a seating capacity of 300, a dedicated area for senior citizens accommodating up to 50 people, four auditoriums with a combined capacity of 1,200 individuals, and the Sanaa Centre Gallery, which can hold up to 500 people. These spaces are specifically designed to provide opportunities for local authors and artists to exhibit their work. Additionally, the library has a designated area for individuals with disabilities, offering books and materials in accessible formats such as Braille, audiobooks, and large print.
The KNLS Chief Executive Officer Dr Charles told Members that KNLS in collaboration with the Sports, Arts, and Social Development Fund is in the process of implementing a virtual library with a collection of over 15 million publications.
Dr. Nzivo sought the Committee's assistance in reviving the Kenya National Library Bill and intervention in a matter where the State Department of Sports owes the KNLS rent arrears amounting to Kshs. 43 million.
Impressed by the state-of-the-art facility, MembersΒ Β expressed their commitment in supporting the KNLS Bill to ensure the library continues to foster a reading culture in our society.Β
Β Hon. Stephen Mule (Matungulu) said theΒ Committee willΒ step in and bring the Service and the State Department together to resolve their tenancy woes.
βWe have to bring sanity to this matter. We will bring the two parties together and make sure the State Department pays the rent arrears,β said Hon. Mule.
