Nominated Senator Hamida Kibwana, MP, is seeking a statement from the Standing Committee on Education regarding the closure of Kabarnet School for the Deaf. 

In her statement, the Senator requests the committee to state plans, if any, by the Ministry of Education to reopen Kabarnet School for the Deaf that was closed allegedly due to underfunding, leaving many students without access to special education.  

The Senator also wants the committee to disclose the amount of public funds allocated and disbursed to the school in the FY 2021/2022 and FY 2022/2023 and any further support provided, stating the reasons why the funding and support were insufficient for the school's operation. 

The committee should further state plans by the Government, to offer relief to the school's staff who have gone without pay for 22 months and explain the oversight mechanisms in place to ensure prudent use of public funds allocated to special needs schools.
