The National Assembly Committee on Public Petition led by it's Chair  Hon.Nimrod Mbai (Kitui East) carried out an inspection visit of the Level 6 Forces Research Referral Hospital (FRRH) in Kabete.

The Committee is undertaking an investigation regarding a petition by Mr. Mutoro  on funds spent by the National Government contrary to provisions of the Constitution. The Ministry of Defence received Kshs.2.9B for this project.

Speaking during the tour, the Defence Principal Secretary, Hon. Patrick Mariru called on the lawmakers to bear in mind the principles behind the project and the hospital's impact on the lives of Kenyans and the African Region. He reassured the members that the Ministry of Defence could account for every shilling spent on the project.

Additionally, he said all relevant documents, including those related to the bidding process, have been made available to Parliament for auditing and accountability purposes.

“This project will transform our medical capability as a country. We have technical team that is hands-on at every stage of the project. The funding that we received from treasury is accounted for, we have shared the documents with Parliament to be reviewed, ” said Mr. Mariru.

The Committee received a comprehensive presentation on the KDF medical system, including the current challenges facing the Defence Forces Military Hospital, the status of the project, its objectives, and was given a tour of the site.

The proposed FRRH aims to enhance medical research and will feature a mental health wing to serve military personnel, UN officials, public servants, and the general population of Kenya.

The legislators praised the concept of integrating various units into the hospital and acknowledged that it will be a cutting-edge facility.

“This hospital will be a one-stop-shop for our nation, it is a well-thought-out facility with various specialized sections. As representatives of the people it is good to see what is on the ground. We have a duty as Members of Parliament to guard against the misuse of Article 223, therefore we appreciate the transparency you have accorded this committee,” said Vice-Chairperson Hon. Sitienei.
