Elgeyo Marakwet Senator William Kisang has been elected the new Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Energy in an election conducted on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.

Β

Nominated Senator Beatrice Ogola was elected the new Vice-Chairperson during the poll.

Β

Both lawmakers were elected unopposed.

Β

The election followed the resignation of Senator Dr. Oburu Oginga, who, until August 6, 2026, served as Chairperson of the Committee. He remains a member of the Committee.

Β

Senator Kisang, who previously served as Vice-Chairperson, succeeds Senator Oginga as Chairperson.

Β

β€œI want to thank members for the trust and confidence they have shown in my leadership,” Senator Kisang said in his acceptance speech shortly after his election.

Β

β€œI know the task ahead is not an easy one, especially because I am stepping into the shoes of a political giant.Β

Β

Senator Oginga had elevated the stature of this Committee to a level that is hard to ignore, and I promise to maintain the tempo.

Β

β€œI know your schedule going forward will be tough, but allow us to consult you when the need arises.”

Β

Similar sentiments were echoed by Senator Ogola, who pleaded with the outgoing Chairperson to remain available to the Committee despite his demanding schedule.

Β

β€œI will continue working on the path you have established, bearing in mind the deep knowledge you have of the energy sector. As the Chair has said, it is my hope that you will remain around and regularly avail yourself to offer us guidance,” she said.

Β

Senator Oburu thanked the Committee for electing Senator Kisang and urged members to extend to the new Chairperson the same support they accorded him.

Β

β€œI will continue being a member of the Committee, and I promise to avail myself if and when required,” he said, explaining that he had decided to resign due to the demands of the office.

Β

β€œI resigned willingly, and I am happy that I have facilitated a peaceful transfer of power. There was no coup.”

Β

He thanked members for the support they had given him during his two years as Chairperson of the Committee.
