Taita Taveta Senator Johnes Mwaruma has been elected Chairperson of the Senate Committee on County Public Investments and Special Funds, with nominated Senator Beth Syengo taking over as Vice Chairperson.

Β

The elections followed the Senate’s reconstitution of the Committee on Tuesday, 4th August 2026, after members passed a vote of no confidence in the previous Chairperson on 29th July 2026.

Β

Sen. Mwaruma was proposed for the position by Sen. George Mbugua and seconded by Machakos Senator Agnes Kavindu Muthama. With no other nominations presented, he was declared duly elected Chairperson.

Β

In his acceptance remarks, Sen. Mwaruma thanked members for entrusting him with the Committee’s leadership and called for teamwork as the Senate strengthens oversight of county investments and special funds.

Β

β€œI appreciate the confidence that members have placed in me. I bring experience from both the County Public Accounts and County Public Investments Committees, but the success of this Committee will depend on all of us working together, remaining active and supporting one another,” said Sen. Mwaruma.

Β

The new Chairperson noted that the Committee has significant work ahead, particularly as the country approaches another electoral period, and requested the secretariat to brief members on pending business and the way forward.

Β

Sen. Syengo was subsequently elected Vice Chairperson after being duly proposed and seconded. She commended the secretariat for conducting the elections openly and pledged to work closely with the Chairperson and other members.

Β

β€œI accept this responsibility with humility and commitment. I will work with the Chairperson, members and the secretariat to ensure that we discharge our mandate intelligently, diligently and as one team,” said Sen. Syengo.

Β

Congratulating the two leaders, Sen. Mbugua urged members to provide them with the support required to deliver on the Committee’s oversight responsibilities.

Β

β€œThe Chairperson and Vice Chairperson cannot succeed alone. They require members who attend meetings, interrogate the issues before us and make meaningful contributions to the Committee’s work,” said Sen. Mbugua.

Β

Sen. Mwaruma and nominated Senator Hezena Lemaletian are the new members of the Committee, replacing Senators Godfrey Osotsi and Eddy Oketch. Other members of the Committee include Senators Beth Syengo, Agnes Kavindu Muthama, George Mbugua, Hamida Kibwana, Peris Tobiko, Raphael Chimera and William Kisang.

Β

The newly constituted leadership is expected to guide the Committee in examining county public investments, special funds and related reports of the Auditor-General.
