The Senate Standing Committee on Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, chaired by Senator David Wakoli (Bungoma), today commenced its county oversight engagements in Uasin Gishu, beginning with a courtesy call on Governor Jonathan Bii before proceeding to the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) depot in Eldoret.

At the NCPB depot, Senators examined the state of storage infrastructure, the volume of grain reserves, and ongoing distribution of subsidized fertilizer. The Committee also sought clarity on how the Board is addressing aflatoxin risks, ensuring compliance with food safety standards, and preparing to mitigate the impact of climate shocks on grain availability.

Inquiries further centered on whether the country’s current reserves meet the FAO benchmark of at least four to six months of national consumption, and how the Board intends to close the existing shortfall.

Tomorrow, the Committee will proceed to Trans Nzoia County, where it will continue its oversight mission with a visit to the Kenya Seed Company to assess seed production, distribution, and the company’s role in enhancing farmer productivity and national food security.
