The Deputy Speaker and Chairperson of the National Assembly Liaison Committee, Hon. Gladys Boss, MGH, MP, has called on Parliamentary Committees to place greater emphasis on the quality and impact of their service.

Speaking at the opening of the Liaison Committee strategic retreat, Hon. Boss said Committee performance should be measured by the quality of legislative output, depth of oversight and the extent to which recommendations deliver meaningful outcomes for Kenyans.

She urged Committee Chairpersons to pay closer attention to Members’ attendance and preparedness, timely consideration of business and reports, and follow-through on Committee recommendations.

The Deputy Speaker further underscored the importance of integrity, impartiality and procedural fairness, noting that effective parliamentary oversight must remain anchored in the Constitution, the law and established parliamentary procedure.

With the 2027 General Election approaching, the retreat will also consider the processing of the national budget in an election year, emerging legal and judicial developments affecting parliamentary business, Committee performance and resource utilisation, as well as proposed amendments to the National Assembly Standing Orders.

Members are also set to engage the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on its preparedness for the 2027 General Election and electoral and legal matters that may require parliamentary attention.

The retreat provides an opportunity for the Liaison Committee and the Speaker’s Panel to take stock of progress, address operational gaps and strengthen Committee effectiveness as the National Assembly prepares for the transition to the Fourteenth Parliament.
