Mau Mau War Veterans Association Seeks Legal Recognition
The Clerk of the National Assembly, Mr. Michael Sialai has this afternoon received a petition from officials of the Mau Mau War Veterans Association, seeking leave to introduce a private bill that will recognise the role of freedom fighters in the struggle for Kenya's independence.
The officials led by former Juja MP, Shujaa Hon. Dr. Gitu Kahengeri, an acclaimed freedom fighter, intend to introduce the "Mau Mau Liberation Struggle, Movement Bill, 2018" for consideration by the National Assembly.
The objective of the proposed legislation is to provide a legal framework for the recognition of the Mau Mau Liberatiom Struggle Movement and declaration that the pre-independence resistance by the Mau Mau Freedom fighters was a legitimate course that led to Kenya's independence.
Coming a few days just after Kenya celebrated her 55th anniversary since attaining independence, the officials hope that the enactment of the proposed law will also create public awareness on the pre-independence struggle by the Mau Mau Liberation Struggle Movement.
Officials accompanying Dr. Kahengeri when he called on the Clerk were: Mr. Michael Mungai Kimani, Mr. Joseph Nkaiwatei, Mr. Francis Musyoka Mutiso, Mr. M'Mburugu Marete, Ms. Grace Nyambura Ngugi and Mr. Samuel Kanyuiro.
