Sen. Hamida Kibwana has called for an urgent action in ensuring health and safety in all schools following the tragedy at Mukumu Girls High School.

In a statement before the Senate, Sen. Hamida appealed to authorities and everyone to pull together and be committed to ensuring safety of children and endeavor to bring about long lasting improvements that will help future generations.

“I stand before you today with a heavy heart, deeply saddened and concerned by the tragic events that have transpired at Mukumu Girls High School, this devastating incident has led to the loss of four innocent lives following the infection of scores of students from alleged contaminated food and water,” explained Senator Hamida.

“We must take immediate action as leaders and representatives to guarantee that long lasting improvements are done to offer a secure learning environment for our children,” added the Senator.

The Lawmaker called for an open and comprehensive inquiry into the matter plus the incident that happened in 2022 in the same school that led to the loss of two students and further ensure recommendations are fully implemented.

“Education is a fundamental right for every child and it is our duty as leaders and representatives to create a safe and conducive environment for learning, we must work to raise awareness among students, staff and parents about the importance of maintaining proper hygiene and reporting any signs of illness or potential hazards,” emphasized Hon. Hamida.
