Sen. Karen Nyamu has raised an alarm over the rising cases of insecurity in Eastleigh, Nairobi County after the urban area registered an increase in several incidents of crimes, robberies, gang violence and gender-based domestic violence. 

The legislator reiterated the importance of security as a critical component of the national political development agenda adding that crime and violence pose a challenge in macro and microeconomic growth. 

While requesting a statement from the Standing Committee on National Security, Defence, and Foreign Relations, the nominated Senator requested the Security Committee to conduct an inquiry into the rise in insecurity within Nairobi County and assess any emerging patterns that may help identify the root causes behind these criminal activities. 

Senator Nyamu further tasked the Committee led by West Pokot Senator William Cheptumo to outline the measures in place to address the rising crime rates in Eastleigh and ensure that residents' rights, as guaranteed in the Bill of Rights in the Constitution of Kenya, are upheld

“While addressing this issue, the Security Committee must describe the measures taken by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and other law enforcement agencies to investigate the murder of Abdirahim and bring the responsible individuals to justice,” Senator Nyamu remarked. 

 The Committee will be required to inquire into the issue and outline any plans by the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration to ensure transparency and accountability in the handling of murder cases. 

Subsequently, the Committee will detail the steps taken to strengthen the criminal justice system to ensure that perpetrators are held accountable under the law.
