National Assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Moses Wetang'ula engaged members of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) led by its President, Faith Odhiambo, CEO Florence Muturi, Tom Kopere (General Member, representing Members above 25 years) and other Council Members who called on him in his office at Parliament Buildings.

Hon. Wetang'ula welcomed the Society’s proposal to work with Parliament to improve the quality of laws being churned out.

"LSK has a key role to play in ensuring that National Assembly enact laws that impact lives of Kenyans and the country at large. I therefore welcome their proposal to collaborate with Parliament," said Hon Wetang'ula.

While encouraging LSK to ensure the relationship with the Third Arm of Government was collaborative and not antagonistic, the Speaker further advised LSK to take a neutral position so that they can objectively give advice.

While I appreciate the crucial role played by the LSK in advancing Public Interest Litigation issues, the Speaker advised the LSK to consider the presumption of Constitutionality of any matter passed by Parliament and apply the law fairly to prevent instances where legislative pieces aimed at improving the livelihoods of the people were stalled.

While noting the principle of justice delayed is justice denied, Hon Wetang'ula encouraged LSK to support legal aid to ensure Kenyans who cannot afford legal aid are assisted.

LSK at the same time promised to initiate a review of the Criminal justice system to clean up existing colonial laws that were impeding the course of justice.

The Speaker was accompanied by among others, Hon. George Murugara (Chairman JLAC), Jeremiah Ndombi (Deputy Clerk), Vane Akama (Dir. Legal Services) among others.
