The Departmental Committee on Education toured several public universities in the Central and Western regions of Kenya toΒ  inspect the implementation of projects funded under the FY 2023/2024.

The Committee was dividedΒ into two teams, where the Chairperson, Hon. Julius Melly (Tinderet) led the central Kenya delegation, while Hon. Malulu Injendi (Malaba) led the team that toured Western Kenya.

In central Kenya, the MPs visited Kenyatta University, Jomo Kenyatta University of Science and Technology (JKUAT), Murang'a University of Technology and Karatina University. The same team is also scheduled to visit Meru University, Chuka University and Tharaka University.

The Western Kenya delegation is scheduled to visit the University of Eldoret, Maseno University, Koitaleel arap Samoei University, Rongo University and Kisii University.

During the deliberations with the management of the respective universities, the MPs sought to know the challenges faced by the institutions in implementing projects, to institute corrective measures.

The deliberations sought to interrogate the effectiveness of the rollout of the new university funding model, areas of collaboration between universities and Technical Vocational Educational and Training Institutes (TVETs) among other areas.

Hon. Melly noted that the visits were necessary for informing the committee of further deliberations with the Ministry and the State Department for Higher Education, about funding of stalled projects and those due for completion.

"This is very important because we have also been able to physically inspect the construction works on the projects," noted Hon. Melly.

The management of the respective universities also shared data on student admission, as well as challenges they were encountering with fee payment under the new funding model.
