The membership of Rotary Club of Nairobi, led by their President Amb. Dr. Josephine Ojiambo, paid the Senate of Kenya a courtesy visit today to learn about the workings of the Senate and common areas of possible interaction.Β Β
In hand to receive the team was the Clerk of the Senate who is also the Secretary to the Parliamentary Service Commission Mr. Jeremiah M. Nyegenye, who apprised the members of the rotary club about the history, structure and role of Parliament as well as an overview of the place of devolution in the governance structure.Β
βThe sub-national governments do not themselves sit at the table of decision making at the national level. So, if theyβre to be co-players in the system of government, bargain reasonably and be assured of their entitlement in terms of the Constitution, then they need to have another organ that spearheads and is the custodian of their interest at the national level, which is the Senate,β Mr Nyegenye said.Β Β
βUnder our system of Government, the Presidential system, a lot of the work of Parliament is undertaken in Committees. In the Senate, we have a total of 17 Committees divided into various thematic areas which speak directly at what Rotary Members focus on,β Deputy Clerk Eunice Gichangi added.Β Β
On her part, Amb. Dr. Ojiambo outlined the objectives of the Rotary Club and the various activities that it has spearheaded in different Counties, before urging the Senate to collaborate with the Rotary Club of Nairobi whenever theyβre undertaking social responsibility activities in the Counties.Β
The Senate of Kenya and the Rotary Club of Nairobi resolved to entrench their partnership in the coming days and deliberated on the areas of common interest.
