The scale of exploitation facing Kenyan workers abroad came under intense scrutiny on Thursday as Senators confronted government officials over trafficking syndicates, fraudulent recruiters and the growing number of Kenyans caught in foreign conflicts and cybercrime networks.

Appearing before the Senate Committee on Labour and Social Welfare, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi described a crisis stretching from the Gulf to south-east Asia and the battlefields of Ukraine and Russia, warning that trafficking networks were becoming increasingly sophisticated.

Parliament has been urged to take a leading role in climate management and environmental conservation as experts warn that rising methane emissions continue to pose a serious threat to Kenya’s economy, agriculture and public health.

Development partners and climate stakeholders made the appeal during a Media Breakfast Dialogue on Methane Emissions in Kenya, where speakers stressed that Lawmakers have a critical responsibility in ensuring the implementation of policies and legislation aimed at reducing pollution and mitigating climate change.

There is a need for stronger collaboration between Parliament, the Media, the Executive and other stakeholders in tackling methane emissions.

Speaking during the closing session of the Parliament Media Breakfast Dialogue on Methane Emissions held at the Parliament Buildings this Thursday, Senator Mohamed Faki (Mombasa) said the success of Kenya’s climate agenda will depend on how effectively institutions translate commitments into measurable action.
