SENATE ICT COMMITTEE TABLES A REPORT ON THE FLOOR OF THE HOUSE ON ITS ACTIVITIES

The Senate Committee on Information, Communication and Technology has today made a statement on the Floor of the House regarding its activities for the period commencing 4th October 2022 to date. 

In a statement read by the Chairperson and Trans Nzoia Senator Allan Chesang on the Floor of the House, the Committee informed the Senate that it held a total of twenty-seven sittings during the period under review, during which it considered one Legislative Proposal, two Bills, six Statements and one inquiry. 

REQUEST FOR STATEMENT ON THE STATUS OF KENYA REVENUE AUTHORITY (KRA) COLLECTIONS

Kitui county Senator Sen. Enoch Wambua has requested a Statement pursuant to Standing Order 53(1), to seek a statement from the standing Committee on Finance and Budget regarding the status of Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) collections over the last six months.

Kitui Senator in his statement request the Committee to state the amount of revenue collected by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) for the period October, 2022 to March, 2023; Outline how much of this revenue the Government has paid out in terms of debt (both internal and external) during the said period.

KENYA SEED COMPANY REQUESTS FOR MORE LAND TO PLANT SEEDS

The Kenya Seed Company through its Managing Director, Mr. Fred Oloibe has requested for an additional 8000 hectares of land to enhance seed production.

This follows an inspection visit by the National Assembly Committee on Agriculture & Livestock chaired by Dr. John Mutunga.

The legislators accompanied by the Kenya Seed Company Limited MD, Mr. Fred Oloibe toured the facilities and farms in Trans-Nzoia County as part of the Committee's mandate in budget implementation oversight.

SENATE STANDING COMMITTEE ON LABOUR AND SOCIAL WELFARE REPORT FOR THE PERIOD FROM 8TH SEPTEMBER 2022 TO 11TH APRIL 2023

West Pokot Senator, Julius Murgor Recha, the chairperson of the Senate Standing Committee on Labour and Social Welfare has today made a Statement in Senate on the Committees activities for the period commencing 8th September 2022 to 11th April 2023.

The chairperson while tabling the statement reported that during the period under review, the Committee held a total of fifty (50) sittings, considered three (3) Bills, three (3) Petitions and twenty-two (22) Statements. The Committee also considered two (2) legislative proposals.  

SPEAKER KINGI SAYS DEMOCRACY CANNOT WORK WITHOUT RULE OF LAW

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has said that democracy cannot thrive in the absence of the rule of law.

The Speaker said the entrenchment of the rule of law in politics and systems of governance is a key element in cushioning democracy on the continent.

“If the rule of law reigns, democracy thrives,” Speaker Kingi said, adding failure to respect the rule of law undermines democracy.

"FORMULATE A POLICY FRAMEWORK TO REVIEW THE BANKING ACT TO RENEGOTIATE THE REPAYMENT TERMS OF THE LOANS", SEN. WAHOME WAMATINGA.

Nyeri County Senator Wahome Wamatinga wants the National Treasury and Economic Planning to come up with a policy framework to review the Banking Act in order to renegotiate the repayment terms of the loans.

Through a motion in the Senate, Sen. Wamatinga argues that such an action by the National Treasury and Economic Planning will provide cushion for Kenyans with non-performing loans and prevent the loss of their movable assets.

PICCAE CALLS FOR CONTRACT TENDER DOCUMENTS AND A COPY OF LPG CONTRACT

The National Assembly Public Investments Committee on Commercial Affairs and Energy has today directed the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) to present documents relating to the issuance of a contract to a service provider for the provision of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) compliance inspection services in March 2019.

The Committee Chaired by Hon. David Pkosing issued this directive after Members raised concerns that the Authority's responses in relation to the contract were underwhelming.

SPEAKER WETANG’ULA LAUDS KEWOPA’S PUSH FOR THE REALIZATION OF GENDER EQUALITY

National Assembly is keen on working with the Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) to uplift female Parliamentarians and budding women in leadership, the National Assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. Moses Wetang’ula has said.

In a meeting with the recently elected KEWOPA Executive, Speaker Wetang’ula commended the caucus's efforts in pushing for gender equality in Parliament. He lauded KEWOPA for playing a significant role in pushing for the enactment of laws and policies that promote gender equality and women empowerment in Kenya. 

TRADE COMMITTEE QUESTIONS PS AND EAST AFRICAN PORTLAND CEMENT OFFICIALS ON EAPC PERFORMANCE

The National Assembly Departmental Committee on Trade, Industry & Cooperatives engaged the Managing Director for East African Portland Cement (EAPC) Ltd, Mr. Oliver Kirubai, and the PS for the State Department of Industry, Dr. Juma Mukhwana in regard to the dwindling performance of EAPC Ltd.

The company registered a 71.3 percent reduction in profits after tax by June 2022 and is facing challenges from squatters and grabbers who are in possession of fake title deeds.

CS INTERIOR TO APPEAR BEFORE PLENARY TO ANSWER QUESTIONS FROM MEMBERS.

Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Prof. Kithure Kindiki will be the first Cabinet Secretary (CS) to appear before the National Assembly plenary on Wednesday

afternoon. He will be answering questions and expounding on policies under his docket.

This appearance by a CS before the House follows an amendment to various parts of the Standing Orders to allow the CSs to physically appear before the House and answer questions raised by MPs.

SENATE TRADE, INDUSTRIALIZATION AND TOURISM COMMITTEE MEETS PS.HON. PATRICK KILEMI ON MATTERS LIQUIDATION OF DRUMVALE FARMERS’ COOPERATIVE SOCIETY IN MACHAKOS COUNTY

The Senate Standing Committee on Trade, Industrialization and Tourism Chaired by Kajiado Senator, Lenku Ole Kanar Seki today met delegations from the Ministry of Cooperatives and MSMEs led by the Principal Secretary Hon. Patrick Kilemi; and the Drumvale Farmers' Cooperative Society led by the Society's Chairman Mr. Felix Maingi to consider a Statement sought by Sen. Agnes Kavindu Muthama, regarding the liquidation of Drumvale Farmers’ Cooperative Society in Machakos County.

TRADE COMMITTEE INSPECTS SEZ DONGO KUNDU

Committee on Trade, Industry and Cooperatives led by the Chairperson Hon. James Gakuya, undertook an inspection visit of  the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone (SEZ) Project. The Committee sought to understand the challenges experienced by the Dongo Kundu SEZ project, the progress on squatter settlement, the investors at the zone and their strategic plan.
