Senate House to Meet at KICC as Chamber Undergoes Renovation

The Senate House is expected to conduct their parliamentary proceedings and committee meetings at the KICC as they await renovation of the old chamber which is being converted into a modern Senate Chamber.
According to Parliament’s Chief Engineer, Eng. Pius Kioko the renovation project that started on September 2013 is expected to be completed in August this year.

Upon completion, the Chamber will have modern features like a public address system that will be able to capture sound and images. Cameras will be installed in the chamber which will be able to record the proceedings without media having to carry their own cameras. Monitors will also be put in strategic places in the chamber to enable the Senators and members of the public to view who is debating on the Floor of the House and who is on the Chair. Provisions will be made for live broadcast. This will be done by installing robotic camera’s which will broadcast the proceedings. As such, media houses will be able to pick up the broadcast signal coming from parliament, while in their offices without having to come physically to parliament buildings to record the proceedings with their cameras. Installation of the electronic voting system and digital mansard recording system in the mould of the one found in the National Assembly Chamber will also be done.

The Senate is expected to have 67 senators who will be sworn in by the Clerk of the Senate thereafter, the election of the Speaker will follow. The Senate will have sittings on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
