THE SPEAKER OF KENYA NATIONAL ASSEMBLY VISITS THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY OF THE ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF IRAN

National Assembly Speaker Hon. Justin Muturi held bilateral talks with his Iranian counterpart H.E Dr. Ali Larijani on enhancement of cordial relations between Republic of Kenya and Islamic Republic of Iran. The two Speakers discussed various aspects of Parliamentary diplomacy, including the formation of a Parliamentary Friendship Group to cement the relationship between the two parliaments of Kenya and Iran.

The two leaders also discussed key economic partnership agenda between the two countries, particularly opening of finance relations between Kenya and Iran to facilitate business transactions between Kenya and Iran. The issue of opening direct flights between Tehran and Nairobi was also canvassed and with the leaders agreeing to pursue the matter with the respective Ministries, agencies and State departments.

While agreeing that the negative consequences of terrorism affected both countries, the Speakers called for closer security cooperation to address including dealing with the root causes of the vices, such as radicalization.

The Speaker of the National Assembly extended an invitation to his Iranian counterpart to visit Nairobi and particularly Maasai Mara National Game Reserve.

Later, the Speaker of the National Assembly met with the Iranian Minister for Industry, Mine and Trade H.E Mohammad Reza Nematzadeh who also called for banking relationship between Kenyan and Iranian banks to facilitate trade between the two countries. Noteworthy, the international sanctions on Iran had blocked financial flows into the middle-East country, with Iran being under strict international scrutiny on any monies in-flowing from any country for whatever reason.

The Trade minister praised Kenya for successfully hosting the World Trade Organization (WTO) and United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Nairobi, both meetings that he attended.
