Kenya to Host the 46th CPA Africa Region Conference

Kenya will host the 46th Commonwealth Parliamentary Africa(Africa Region) Conference, which will be held in Nairobi from 9th to 15th August, 2015.

The CPA Conference which will take place at Safari Park Hotel, will bring together more than 400 participants including Speakers, Parliamentarians, Presiding Officers and other parliamentary officials from across the 18 member states of the African Region in pursuit of the ideals of democracy and good governance.

Member states of the CPA Africa Region include: Botswana, Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania (including Zanzibar), Uganda and Zambia.

The week-long conference will operate under the theme: Democracy and Development in Africa: Policy Options in the Post-Millennium Development Framework.

“This year’s theme is spot on. It is however important to note that although democracy and development represent goals in their own respect, they are mutually dependent and interconnected. Development is more sustainable and efficient in democratic societies where the populace enjoys various freedoms and choices,” noted Justin Bundi, Clerk of the National Assembly and CPA Kenya Branch Secretary.

“On the other hand, democracy flourishes when there is an upsurge in economic growth and everyone benefits.”

Bundi added that the annual conference remains of crucial importance to the 18 African Commonwealth countries since it provides a platform to discuss and analyze global issues and developments in the parliamentary context while seeking solutions unique to the region.

The President of the Republic of Kenya, H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to preside over the official opening of the Conference Tuesday, 11th August 2015.

Other highlights of the Conference will include:

Workshops on important and relevant topics (12th, 13th and 14th August);

Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (CWP) Business Meeting (11th August);

Society of Clerks-at-the-Table (SOCATT) Meetings (12th - 14th August); and

Annual General Meeting (14th August).
