The Chairperson, Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Security, Hon. Gabriel Tongoyo, on Wednesday, September 18, 2024 told the House that the cause of fires witnessed in the Nairobi region is not yet known.
Hon. Tongoyo was responding to a Statement on the fire incidents witnessed in some markets in Nairobi County as sought by Embakasi West MP, Hon. Mark Mwenje.
Hon. Mwenje sought to know the investigations conducted by the Ministry to determine the cause, the relief measures the Government had put in place to ensure the traders who lost their livelihood were compensated and the long-term plan to protect markets in the Nairobi region.
In his response Hon. Tongoyo told the House that the cause of the fires was yet to be conclusively established as the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) was still undertaking investigations.
Β βThe recent fire incidents in Nairobi have highlighted the need for improved fire safety measures and infrastructure feature strategies that will focus on modernizing market infrastructure, improving emergency response capability and ongoing public education to mitigate the risk of fire incidents and of course close working partnership between National and county government of Nairobi,β Hon. Tongoyo said.
On the relief measures the Government has put in place, he said the victims were provided with both food and non-food items.
While reacting to the response, Uasin Gishu County MP, Hon. Gladys Boss said it was not enough to compensate victims or ask the government to help after the fire incidents. She added that the citizenry has a responsibility to ensure that wherever they are operating their businesses they are capable of dealing with fire outbreaks.
Hon. Boss called on the traders not to agree to pay the monthly market levies to the county if there are no fire extinguishers in the premises.
She also called on the parents to ensure that the dormitories their children are sleeping in boarding schools are in adherence with what the government policy recommends.
Westlands MP, Hon. Timothy Wanyonyi blamed the many fire incidents recently witnessed across the country on lack of preparedness calling on the House to pass resolutions on what should be done to assist the victims including young school children affected
